if it weren't for their friendship, marcel might have been able to get away with some half-hearted lie, but he can't remember a time where he'd ever avoided working with the other rocket. gavin knew him well enough to know that he could make anything work if he wanted to, especially since his promotion to admin. the excuses from that point only dried up.

but then, if it weren't for Emma Wolfe, gavin merlino, and (admittedly) marcel himself, they wouldn't be in this situation in the first place. as this thought comes to him, marcel realises they're reached the building.

wordlessly, he holds a keycard out in gavin's direction as his rotom creeps into the reader, ready to silence the alarm when their keys set it off.

Marcel's quieter than usual. It's something Gavin takes notice of immediately; suspicion, however, does not begin to form until they've made it all the way to the target location without uttering a single word. Gavin had been waiting for his friend to break the silence, not wanting to interrupt the man's train of thought, but he slowly becomes aware of a subtle tension between them. It's as if Marcel's not just lost in thought, but actively avoiding conversation.[break][break]

Gavin's overreacting, of course. He has to be.[break][break]

(He tries not to think of the last time Marcel had distanced himself, the reasons for which Gavin still didn't wholly understand.)[break][break]

A keycard is held out to him, and Gavin swipes it with one hand and releases Greninja with the other. Hand signals offer the amphibian direction, and it scuttles into the shadows ahead of them. Scouting.[break][break]

"All right, mate?" He aims for casual, lands somewhere in between with the intensity of expression.

footsteps alone aren't enough to cover the silence. marcel begins to listlessly recite their directions. "we turn left at the end, take the stairs, turn right." a creak in the distance makes him pause a moment. "then another right."

his zoroark shakes itself, fur bristling--restless--reminding marcel of the illusion it'd thrown over them.

Gavin's not convinced.[break][break]

He lets it be for a time as they orient themselves in a dangerous location, Marcel providing more direction than is needed. That only serves to further convince Gavin that something's up with his friend.[break][break]

It's a long moment before he replies: his ears are straining for sound. Then, "You don't seem it. Gonna tell me what's up?"

He slips left and begins to ascend the stairs, carefully checking for cameras. His own Rotom slips into them when he spots them, loops the footage to allow them precious seconds to sneak past.
